“All work that aligns towards the outcome of pure air, fresh water and rich soil is my interest”, powerful words from our dear friend Utsow Pradhan, the Founding Gardener of TIEEDI in Darjeeling.
After spending 18 years in the corporate world, in 2016 Utsow moved back to the hills of Darjeeling and regenerated one acre of dumping space into a hustling bustling forest garden (TIEEDI) with natural dwellings for travellers, experiential eco learning center, wild food forest and a waste innovation center. He collaborated with the communities to launch three zero waste villages… including India’s first zero-waste village: Rajahatta. This means nothing from these villages is burnt or dumped… and the secret is to not just manage waste, but to not generate waste in the first place! He has also cracked the formula for curating zero-waste schools, monastery, restaurants – just about anything; and is working actively with corporates to implement their CSR and EPR goals around environment. He has been diving deep into the world of Permaculture or Purkha-culture as he calls it, which is the foundation and an answer to so many of our everyday problems.
In this episode, we will learn more about the man behind this ‘magical space’ – and about TIEEDI’s vision for a greener, healthier planet. One individual at a time. One village at a time.
From Montek Singh Ahluwalia’s early days as an economist at the World Bank to becoming one of the key architects of India’s economic reforms in the 1990s, his life has been dedicated to public service and economic development. His recent book, Backstage, an intimate portrait of India’s economic reform, contributes to our larger understanding of the economy, and the thinking behind the decisions.
This episode is not so much about the economic reforms Mr Ahluwalia is publicly known for but about the person behind the reforms – the dutiful son, the loving husband and father, the doting grandfather who is deeply interested in what his grandkids are studying, and the chef in him who rustles up his famous French onion soup for them.
What struck us most about him is his hunger for learning, and keen desire to contribute. To us, that is his secret of always feeling so young and alive. In this episode, he shares his personal experiences and also opens up on mentoring, leadership, the art of persuasion, parenting, the thinking behind the decision-making, the importance of making choices, and not only being decisive but also having the ability to implement. The reformer in him is keen to see a shift in our education system. We have a fun round of Rapid Fire as well, which is packed with wit and wisdom.
Join us on this exciting episode with Montek Ji – an economist, Former Finance Secretary and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission; and a wonderful human being!

Anika had the priceless opportunity to discuss this, as well as a number of other issues, in this heartfelt chat with Harinder Singh in this special episode of RTL Talks. They talked about the why, what and how of love. Sharing this gift with all of you:)
